The shadow is cast
Somehow, do we miss the point to it all? Someone once said that “humankind is Nature's capacity to reflect upon itself.” Yet, I look about and wonder ... Or is it only in our culture that we reflect upon Nature just for its utility to humankind? Where is the collective wisdom from the last one-hundred thousand years of humankind? Where can I go to find one universal truth? Perhaps it is our vision that is at fault.
Although religion is the shadow 'twix what is and what ought to be we persist in looking “out there” for the thing that casts the shadow rather than toward the threshold whereupon the shadow lays. If not authority, responsibility lays here within our own dark breast. Otherwise we are caught in Jobe's dilemma where, we are not called to understand but to obey. At most, we may understand why we are called; at the least why we obey.
It must then be in the threshold that a life is lived; where both inside and out come near but do not touch. It is for each of us to relate the one to the other ... to be responsible for the relationship we choose to place them in. And when integrity is absent, to be ever mindful where of the shadow is cast.
I Am Man II
I am man
I die as darkness dies
Life was not good.
I am man
Death gave me life
I was not wise
I am man
Myself misunderstood
My life a breath.
I am man
I caused all creatures strife
And we are one
I am man
A new dawn brings my death
My life is done
